The Universal Connector for AI
Just as USB-C standardized how devices plug into computers, MCP standardizes how AI "plugs into" services, databases, and applications. It creates a universal interface between AI models and external tools, solving a massive integration headache.
What Exactly is MCP?
At its core, MCP is a simple client-server protocol built on JSON-RPC 2.0. It defines how an AI agent (the client) can discover and invoke capabilities on an MCP server. These capabilities come in three main flavors:

An MCP server exposes a list of these capabilities with standardized
descriptions and schemas. The AI client can ask "what can I do here?" (via a /context
call) and then execute a chosen tool by name (via an /execute
call).
Security and Control by Design
Crucially, MCP also handles security and permissions in a standardized way. Tools can require user authorization or have safety checks built-in. The protocol is designed to keep a human in the loop when needed, for example, by requiring a user to approve a sensitive action. This ensures AI actions remain under control even as we grant them powerful abilities.
Why Does It Matter? From M×N to M+N
Before MCP, connecting an AI assistant to an API was a bespoke affair. You'd write custom integration code for every single combination of AI and API. This is known as an M×N problem — it doesn't scale.
MCP replaces that complexity with a single, shared language. An AI that speaks MCP can connect to any MCP-compliant service. This dramatically reduces the integration work to an M+N problem: we integrate each model and each service to MCP once, and everything can interoperate.
